Beauty in simplicity.

The municipality of Deutschfeistritz is planning to add a permanent roof in front of the existing funeral hall by Norbert Müller from 1998 for memorial services use. At the moment, parasols are used as a temporary solution. A permanent canopy would serve as an extension of the interior to the outside and offer more space for visitors, but also accommodate smaller open-air memorials.

The design includes only what is necessary, nothing more and nothing less: A platform and a roof supported by eight supports. Thus, the design of the canopy is unobtrusive, complementing the existing building in a meaningful way without competing with it.
Solid white concrete as a material makes it seem as if the roof was made from one piece. A closer look reveals subtle details that come about through different structuring of the same material. Essential structural elements such as a circumferential weather drip, head plates for the supports or waterspouts are formulated as decorative components.

Just a cemetery wall?

In the course of this expansion, the forecourt of the funeral hall should also be made more attractive, as the existing cemetery wall bordering this plaza is also quite dilapidated. Our proposed concept provides for a comprehensive redesign of the cemetery wall. In addition to creating urgently needed urn niches, the wall is also reworked to accommodate other features such as a fountain, outdoor seating, a memorial plaque and greenery. With these changes, the newly designed wall becomes a worthy counterpart to the existing funeral hall.

The existing cemetery wall was preceded by a wall made of prefabricated white concrete elements.

Gradually, the metal balconies will be equipped with stone panels.

Overall concept.

The new elements underline the quality of the outdoor space, providing added value to the space even outside of memorial services.
